How do I get my audience into Mad Mimi?

Easy. Click "Add people to audience" in the left sidebar and Mimi takes you to her handy import page where you have a number of input methods to choose from.

How do I import people from Gmail?

Here's how to get a batch of contacts from Gmail into Mad Mimi: First, you need to export your contacts from Gmail to "Outlook's CSV format". To do this, choose the "Export" link on the bottom left area of your Gmail "Contacts" page. Select "Outlook's CSV format", export and save. Back at Mad Mimi click "Import CSV" and you're all set.

How do I know if my data is properly formatted?

Basic formatting rules apply when pasting data.

If pasting tabulated data (like from a spreadsheet), make sure that individual cells do not contain hard-returns or tabs.
Your headers (names on the top row) need to be semantically appropriate for Mad Mimi to be able to recognize common fields like First name, Email etc. For example, if your first row contains people's first names, then, the row's header should be "First Name"; if a row contains the people's "refrigerator models", your header should be "Refrigerator Model" (Mad Mimi's database will automatically customize itself according to your lists).
If you want to upload people to Mad Mimi's suppression list, add another column to your spreadsheet called "Opt-out" and for those members who you don't want to email, put a number 1. Others you can leave blank.

How do I import my audience from Outlook?

To get a batch of Outlook contacts into Mad Mimi, you'll need to export them from Outlook and then import them into Mad Mimi.

Here's how to get a batch of contacts from Outlook into Mad Mimi: First, you need to export your contacts from Outlook to a CSV file. To do this, choose the "Import and Export Wizard" in Outlook and select "Export to a file." Then click the "Next" button.

Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" as the file type. Click the "Next" button again.

Select the "Contacts" folder as the folder to export from. Click the "Next" button again.

Choose where to save the exported file. Click the "Next" button again.

Click the "Finish" button.

How do I import people from my Mac Address Book?

There is a useful free utility called "A to G". It exports your Apple Address Book contacts into a Mad Mimi-readable text file called CSV. Once exported, simply click "Import CSV" in the "Add Audience" section of your Mad Mimi account, choose the file you exported, and you're done! A to G will bring over your contacts' phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, companies, job titles and notes.

How do I import people from another format or program?

If your contacts' names and email addresses are in a format that Mad Mimi does not support, try hitting the "Paste from Clipoard" link from the "Add Audience" page and copy/pasting them in the text area. In some cases where Mad Mimi is unable to read your list properly, Mad Mimi will only import the important stuff, the email addresses.

Can I import multiple formats at once?

Yes you can. Just upload, paste or type the people you want to add and hit Save.

What happens if I import the duplicate contacts?

Mad Mimi de-dupes your lists. Duplicate email addresses are never added. Mad Mimi will update and merge people who share the same email address based on the date you add the information.

How do I import people directly into the suppression list?

This is an example of a CSV file.

In the above example, gary@example.com is suppressed.

This also works for pasted data.

If you want to "Unsupress" gary@example.com, you need to do this:

Notice how the "Opt Out" header remains, and gary@example.com has a nil value.

But if you did THIS:

dean@example.com    dean    levitt    fido

gary@example.com would NOT be re-imported, since your not telling Mimi anything about the subscription status.

You can use Opt-out, Opt Out, opt out and optout if you like.
